What is the Tuscaloosa Campaign To Prevent Teen Pregnancy and what do they
do?
Non-profit agency promoting awareness
about the issue of teen pregnancy and facilitating community collaboration
to reduce teen pregnancy. Through these efforts our goal is to reduce teen
pregnancy in Tuscaloosa County by 25% by 2010.
We work towards this goal through several activities:

Monthly Newsletter- including
information on relevant research affecting teen pregnancy prevention
activities, programs and services offered by agency coalition members, TCPTP
activities, and available funding opportunities.

Provide a Key
Note Speaker to local churches. Schools, community events, etc. presenting
educational information and/or Choosing the Best Life curriculum

Media campaign
promoting awareness- includes television, radio, billboards, website,
brochures, etc.

Promoting and
participating in Tuscaloosa’s Promise- a community-wide initiative to see
that all children have 5 things- a safe place, a caring adult, marketable
skills, a healthy start, and an opportunity to serve.

Teens Talk- a
quarterly newsletter for teens. Offers games and quizzes with teen sex
facts, testimonials of the consequences of teen pregnancy, upcoming events
or dates, etc. Available upon request.

Teen Health
Summit- Saturday spring event for local teens in partnership with the
University of Alabama, includes booths, hot topic sessions, entertainment,
and door prizes. There are also hot topic sessions for parents.

Asset
Building Programs- the Campaign is currently leading the Future Panthers
All Star program at Vance and Brookwood Elementary schools. This fifth
grade program prepares students for the transition into middle school and
their ability to withstand the pressures of that environment This program
is sponsored by the Alabama Dept. of Economic and Community Affairs.

Prevention
Education for Teens or Parents- the Campaign offers anywhere from 1 to 6
sessions addressing issues related to teens and sex. The sessions can be
conducted with students from 4 th through 12 th
grade and are designed age appropriately for the specific group. Parent
Programs are designed for parents of pre teens and teens to help the
parents address the issue of preventing early sexual activity. For more

Volunteer-A-Thon- annual event over Fall Break where high school students
conduct mini internships at local businesses. This addresses teen
pregnancy prevention by providing structured activity during non-school
hours and by encouraging teens to set goals for their future. The
businesses involved typically donate financial resources to the Campaign.

Prevention
Educators Meeting- annual summer meeting hosted by the Campaign to review
who is conducting prevention education, where, how many students they
serve, etc.
